James Gamble Rogers II Colloquium

VOA Orlando sponsors the historic preservation conference.

As a member of the Board of Trustees for the Friends of Casa Feliz, I am pleased to announce VOA ‘s sponsorship of the 8th annual James Gamble Rogers II Colloquium on Historic Preservation.

The James Gamble Rogers II Colloquium on Historic Preservation, featuring Nicole Curtis of the hit series Rehab Addict as keynote speaker, will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at the Tiedke Concert Hall on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. Self-taught designer and rehabber Nicole Curtis and Rehab Addict have inspired a new generation of homeowners who value old homes and helped spark a preservation renaissance in many American cities.

Tickets are $50 for the colloquium. Afterward, colloquium attendees may tour a selected group of historic Winter Park homes.

Past featured speakers at Casa Feliz events include critic Paul Goldberger and Christine French of the Department of the Interior.  Sponsor Friends of Casa Feliz is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to historic preservation, stewardship and good design in the City of Winter Park, Florida. Casa Feliz, or “Happy House” in Spanish, is the signature residential work of noted architect James Gamble Rogers II. Originally known as the Barbour Estate, this Andalusian-style masonry farmhouse has significantly influenced the architectural and cultural aspects of the community.

Today, Casa serves as a historic home museum and rental location for private parties, weddings, and business events. I have been an admirer of this historic property since it was moved, and restored for preservation about twelve years ago.  As an outspoken advocate of good design and historic preservation in my city, I was asked to join the Board of Trustees in 2013 to help connect this group to the local AIA chapter and give it a greater voice.  We continue to hold art and music events to help raise funds for historic preservation projects.
