SoHo Streets Happy Hour

A hands-on night out with the latest in design

By Stacey Jensen, Miyuki Habiro, Sofia Chen and Marika Sorimachi

On a recent balmy summer evening, we joined several of our fellow designers from Stantec and made our way through various designer showrooms in New York. We enjoyed a libation or two, snapped pictures of inspiring installations and furniture and collected stamps at each stop in the hopes of winning a prize from the raffle at night’s end. It was a great evening out, but also reminded us how crucial it is to stay in touch with design trends to feed our inspiration.

This cocktail event was sponsored by the SoHo Design District in partnership with member brands Luceplan, Cassina, Cappellini, FLOS, Artemide, Stepevi and others to promote the neighborhood and its history of creativity. SoHo’s loft spaces and galleries are synonymous New York’s creative spirit. The SDD celebrates the neighborhood as a premier destination for world-renowned design.

The SoHo Street happy hour gives designers an opportunity to sip cocktails while popping into the furniture, lighting and accessory showrooms showcasing new products recently introduced at NeoCon and the Salone de Mobile in the spring. I relished the opportunity to get out of Midtown, socialize with my colleagues and acquaint myself with the latest from manufacturers showing in SoHo, many of them Italian.

SoHo Street happy hour was an opportunity to quickly visit various manufacturer showrooms, some of which we hadn’t seen before, to review their latest products in a social atmosphere. And even the showrooms themselves are very inspiring, especially when it comes to lighting. We saw many new lighting fixtures that will inspire us on future projects. We interacted with the newest sensor lighting panel and experimented with the latest technology. With its creative lighting displays in a high-ceilinged space, lighting fixture showroom Blackbody was one of our favorites.

We love to see the products and furniture in person, it inspires us—and this industry night out reminded us and our colleagues that we’re a part of a larger design community and that the global design conversation is ever evolving.
