The 6th Annual NAIOP Case Study Competition

It’s unanimous, VOA student team takes home the REAL Bowl Champions trophy.

Our passion for great design never sleeps at VOA. Our Orlando office charged ahead with the recent first place win in the 6th Annual NAIOP Case Study Competition for the design and investment package of Oasis Orlando Premium Outlets. The winning NAIOP student team–mentored by VOA–was comprised of undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Central Florida.

Recently, VOA’s student team “Union Solutions” took home the first place REAL Bowl Champions trophy and bragging rights for a year. Judges unanimously awarded the student team first place based on criteria including creativity, ability to withstand economic changes, uniqueness, return on investment, intuitive arrangement for parking and exceptional design mixed with the use of family-friendly landscaped outdoor spaces.

The NAIOP Competition offers students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the development process and foster relationships with industry experts and mentors. Numerous previous competition participants have landed their first jobs in the real estate industry through contacts and mentors made during the program.

The 6th Annual NAIOP Case Study Competition involved student teams from the University of Central Florida. Using skills acquired in their coursework and from a three-part “Development 101” series with industry leaders, each team created a full development plan for Central Florida and presented it to a panel of industry experts on April 14th.

“Our VOA team got to work with developers, contractors, and financial analysts figuring out what made the most sense from a design and feasibility standpoint to create a project that only had a site and a design schedule,” says VOA Vice President and Project Manager Jay Jensen. “Generally, we as architects are given a program, site, budget and schedule and told to come up with something cool that meets those values. So, to be involved in the epiphany of something so high concept was really rewarding to us, especially to get the win!”

“The NAIOP competition is a great mentoring experience for us and for the students,” says VOA Senior Associate Alonso Rodriguez. “Our student partners received insight from almost a dozen design professionals, and in return, they experienced an insider view of the decisions from developers, bankers and contractors.”
