VOA Orlando collects school supplies

Donate to help underprivileged and homeless students in Central Florida

VOA’s Orlando office is sponsoring a community effort to collect school supplies and donations for K-12 children from homeless or economically disadvantaged families for the upcoming 2014-15 school year.

The U.S. Department of Education estimates that 1.2 million homeless children and youth were enrolled in public schools during the 2013 school year. School can be a safe haven for homeless and economically disadvantaged kids. But it can also be challenging for these kids to participate, succeed and learn without access to the necessary resources and supplies.

VOA is working with the community to ensure that Central Florida children have the basic materials required to take advantage of educational opportunities. Partnering with the organization A Grateful Mind, we’re collecting school supplies these kids need now so that they may thrive in the future.

There are two ways you can participate.

  1. In the Orlando area, drop off school supplies and donations during business hours at the VOA Baldwin Park office, 4798 New Broad Street, Suite 100, Orlando, Florida 32814 before noon, August 4th.  VOA will present our donations to Cindy Rand, founder of A Grateful Mind, on August 4th. On Saturday, August 16th A Grateful Mind will be giving what collected and donated supplies away to the children during their “Creating Great Minds Back 2-School Bash” and Free Community Dinner, of which VOA is a sponsor, in Clear Lake Park, Orlando. Suggested school supplies include backpacks, pencils, notebooks and binders. Visit agratefulmind.org for a complete list.
  1. Donate directly to A Grateful Mind’s bulk purchase of school supplies for kids online via PayPal.

We hope you’ll join us in supporting A Grateful Mind and helping K-12 students in Central Florida start the school year well-equipped.
