Westminster featured in Foundations of Readiness

Maryland Army National Guard’s General Henry C. Evans Armory is on the cover of this year's national Army National Guard publication.

The 2016 edition of Foundations of Readiness, the Journal of the Army National Guard Installations Division, features The Maryland Army National Guard’s General Henry C. Evans Armory (also known as the Westminster Readiness Center). VOA designed the addition to the readiness center which was completed in 2014. The project was done with Harkins Builders through a design build delivery method. It features functional areas for unit administrative offices, equipment storage and weapons vaults, a 5,800 square-foot assembly hall, a computerized weapons simulation center, full service commercial kitchen, locker rooms, more than 2,600 square feet of classrooms, and various supporting spaces.

This project proved to be a rewarding example of Design Build working. It had clients and users open to ideas that varied from the original bridging document plans when post-award field verifications raised concerns about the roof tie-in. It had a builder that gave us the design freedom to think outside the bridging document. Both of which afforded the team to come up with a solution all parties felt solved the program, design, construction and post occupancy operational requirements best.
