High Life at MillerCoors Office

CHICAGO, IL When I used to work in a firm, once a month on a Friday, everybody got together at the office reception area just before closing. It’s a place and time when the CEO gave announcements, news or activities about the firm. It was also the time for employees to mingle. The fun began when the executive assistant would pull up a cart and hand out refreshments.

Higher learning: Roosevelt's new tower adds sizzle to Chicago's skyline, but can it build a campus in the sky?

CHICAGO, IL Savvy architecture buffs tend to view look-at-me buildings with a wary glance. All too often, these designs are slick packages, not real places that ennoble our daily routines. Anybody who's witnessed the cacophony of shrieking skyscrapers in Dubai knows that.

Still, there is reason to think that Roosevelt University's striking new $123 million tower in downtown Chicago (left) will amount to something more than an eye-grabbing envelope.

Old Town School of Folk Music

CHICAGO, IL The Old Town School began 55 years ago in an Oak Park living room. It currently resides in buildings on Armitage in Lincoln Park, and on Lincoln in Lincoln Square.

“The Old Town School has lived in a living room, former bank, former tavern, former library, former soccer club,” said Graves. “This is the first time we've had a space designed as a school of music and dance.”

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who used to be the area's congressman, marvels at how an entire neighborhood grew up around the school.

This, to me, is a classic example of how a single cultural institution can take a neighborhood and become the economic engine and cultural engine of an entire neighborhood,” said Emanuel

Old Town School's East Building strikes harmony with surroundings, mission

CHICAGO, IL The architectural world has been so obsessed with iconic buildings in recent years that we've lost sight of the virtues of good, solid design that strives to fit in rather than stand out — and to serve its users rather than sacrifice their needs on the altar of a flashy, attention-getting shape.
