Daytona Museum of Arts and Sciences

The building and the galleries within are a timeless and contemporary space presenting the Museum’s fine art, historical and ethnographic artifacts, and Florida Natural History collection. The Museum commissioned VOA through an invited design competition, which VOA won in 2012. The West Wing addition houses five galleries staging MOAS’ world-class permanent collection.  In addition, VOA’s design addeda sixth gallery that will accommodate the Museum’s traveling exhibits. Infilling an existing space at the front entry with the Planetarium allowed it to function with independent hours, and freed up the West Wing site to expand the Museum’s exhibit space. Thenew design creates a spatial experience that improves viewer flow and perception of the space.

In 2014, VOA completed the Root Family Museum renovation and relocated the museum’s existing planetarium. The Root Family Museum’s focal point, which interprets a passenger train platform, was enclosed to preserve early 1900’s era passenger train cars for visitors to view. The West Wing is a carefully proportioned series of exhibit halls designed to present work that is both ancient and modern.  The planetarium expresses humanity’s relationship with the heavens, using a daringly high ceiling and a double-height glass wall in the lobby to welcome light from the skies deep into its interior space.

We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to partner with MOAS on the West Wing Gallery expansion project. The new structure expands the traditional contextual experience and provides an environment that is engaging, appealing, memorable and informative. The spirit of this new building is to reinforce the inter-connectedness of the Arts, Sciences and History through the infusion of iconic form, connectivity, accessibility and inspiration.
