National Rebuilding Day 2014

Volunteers come together to make critical home repair needs.

Each year on the last Saturday of April, volunteers with 187 Rebuilding Together affiliates repair and restore homes and non-profit facilities across America for National Rebuilding Day. National Rebuilding Day addresses the critical home repair needs of low-income homeowners in our community. On April 26th, the Rebuilding Together national network collectively completed nearly 4,000 rebuilding projects for neighbors in need. Volunteers make safety and accessibility modifications, energy efficiency modifications and do general maintenance such as carpentry, painting or minor plumbing and electrical repairs. This day of service brings volunteers, tradespeople, civic leaders and corporate sponsors together to make a positive impact on communities across America.

I had the opportunity to participate in this year’s National Rebuilding Day on April 26th, which was the culmination of National Rebuilding Month and the signature event of Rebuilding Together, a nonprofit organization working to preserve affordable home ownership. Projects were assigned to affiliate groups based upon collective skill sets and time available to participate in the effort. The only requirement was that participants be energetic, enthusiastic, willing to tackle any task and ready to get dirty.

Twenty members of CoreNet Global Mid-Atlantic Chapter partnered with Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church, Inc. to work on a Pathways group house in Reston, VA. Rebuilding Together-AFF works in partnership with the community to ensure that low-income homeowners, particularly seniors, persons with disabilities and families with children and veterans, may live in warmth, safety and independence. Locally, Rebuilding Together-AFF mobilized 1,000 community members to repair 40 home sites on Rebuilding Day. Participants painted the home’s entire interior, power washed exterior decks and installed a dryer vent. See the team in action in Core Net Mid Atlantic’s Flickr gallery.

National Rebuilding Day 2014 was a day of celebration, giving and transformation. I feel lucky to have been a part of it and look forward to contributing my time again soon.
